Research from QBE shows that UK fire services attended 1,760 lithium-ion battery-related fires during 2025. This is equivalent to one incident every five hours and represents an increase of 147% since 2022.
Lithium-ion batteries are now part of everyday working life. They power everything from laptops and mobile devices to e-bikes, power tools and industrial equipment.
Although lithium-ion batteries are generally safe when used correctly, damaged, defective, uncertified or non-compliant batteries can enter a process known as thermal runaway: a self-reinforcing chemical reaction in which rising temperatures create further heat, potentially resulting in fire, explosions and the release of toxic gases. The reaction can also spread from one battery cell to other nearby batteries.
Our trusted distribution partners are increasingly being asked to help customers manage risks and safe lithium-ion battery storage is an ever-growing request. Expanding Ecospill’s approach to workplace risk
For more than 15 years, Ecospill has worked alongside the UK’s largest health, safety and PPE distributors, helping their customers protect the environment, industry and its people.
The company has built its reputation around spill prevention, containment and other spill solution products, supported by added-value services including Spill Site Surveys, Spill Training and Inventory Managed Services.
More recently, Ecospill has expanded into wider areas of workplace risk management, introducing a flood defence range. The partnership with LOXXER represents the next step in that development, addressing one of the fastest-growing safety challenges facing modern organisations.
Purpose-built lithium-ion battery protection
LOXXER develops products specifically for the safe storage, charging, transportation and management of lithium-ion batteries. LOXXER’s units are already widely available across Europe.
Unlike cabinets adapted from products originally designed for other purposes and retro-fitted for lithium-ion battery charging, LOXXER’s range has been developed around the specific risks presented by lithium-ion batteries, including thermal runaway, extreme temperatures, smoke, fire and cell-to-cell propagation.
Selected LOXXER cabinets are certified to VDMA standards, which establish test requirements for fire-protection storage cabinets containing portable lithium-ion batteries in the event of thermal runaway.
The wider LOXXER product range includes:
- Lithium-ion battery storage and charging cabinets
- Individual charging lockers
- Outdoor charging lockers for e-bike and equipment batteries
- Bespoke storage and charging containers
- Lithium-ion battery transportation and storage boxes
- Fire-containment blankets and accessories
Depending on the product and specification selected, systems can include smoke and temperature detection, active ventilation, automatic charging shutdown and connections to existing fire alarm systems.
Selected products can also be equipped with an optional certified aerosol fire-suppression system. When smoke or a dangerous rise in temperature is detected, the system activates inside the cabinet to help control the incident and limit the risk of fire spreading to surrounding batteries.
Optional M2M monitoring modules can provide external alerts and help integrate the equipment into an organisation’s wider fire-safety arrangements.

The partnership strengthens Ecospill’s ability to help its distribution partners and their customers address emerging workplace risks with specialist products, practical knowledge and ongoing support.
