Safe charging and storage of battery-powered tools on the construction site

Why LOXXER

Fire-safe lithium-ion storage for the construction sector

Batteries on construction sites face additional risks. They are exposed to dust, moisture, mechanical shocks, and temperature fluctuations. A single damaged cell charging unattended in an enclosed space can set an entire site office on fire. LOXXER offers solutions suitable for use on the construction site, from compact charging lockers to fire-resistant cabinets and weatherproof outdoor lockers.

Tested on thermal runaway

LOXXER's VDMA-certified cabinets are tested with batteries in thermal runaway. They contain fire and toxic smoke, so damage stays limited to the cabinet itself.

Suitable for the construction site

The Outdoor Locker is made of galvanized steel with UV-resistant powder coating, fitted with an integrated rain roof and rain-resistant ventilation openings. Suitable for outdoor use on the construction site.

Individual storage per employee

The LOX12 charging locker offers 12 separate compartments with individual combination locks. Each employee can safely charge their own batteries, without risk of mix-ups or unattended charging.

Detection and alarming built in

Smoke and temperature detection with audiovisual alarm is standard in the VDMA cabinets and the LOX12. Optionally connectable to a fire control panel or monitored via an M2M module for remote monitoring.

FAQ

Lithium fire safety on the construction site

Frequently asked questions about safely charging and storing battery-powered tools on the construction site and in the site office.

Yes. The LOXK1100, LOXK2000, and LOX12 are standardly prepared for connection with a fire alarm system. This way, detection in the cabinet is directly communicated to the broader alarm system of the site or building. An M2M module is also optionally available for remote external monitoring.

The regulations are under development. The PGS 37 guideline provides guidelines for the storage of lithium-ion batteries in professional environments. Additionally, the Working Conditions Act requires employers to ensure safety in the workplace, including preventing fire risks due to improper storage or charging of batteries. We recommend consulting your prevention advisor or the local fire department for the specific situation at your site.

Batteries that are not in use must not be left unattended in a construction trailer or unsecured container. A fireproof storage cabinet such as the LOXK1100 or LOXK2000 is the recommended solution. These cabinets are VDMA 24994 certified and contain fire and toxic smoke for at least 90 minutes, preventing spread to the environment.

The LOXXER Outdoor Locker is specifically designed for outdoor use. The unit is made of galvanized steel with UV-resistant powder coating, has an integrated rain roof, rain-resistant ventilation openings, and double-walled doors. The locker offers 4 separate charging compartments, each with its own 230V connection, and can optionally be equipped with a certified aerosol extinguishing system.

A site container or site office is a small, often poorly ventilated space with flammable materials. When multiple batteries are charged at the same time, the temperature rises and the risk of thermal runaway increases, especially with batteries that have been damaged by falls or mechanical shocks. One incident can quickly escalate into a full-blown fire, as the smoke from a lithium-ion fire is extremely toxic and spreads rapidly.
